2005 Buick LeSabre Air Bag Clockspring Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Air Bag Clockspring on 2005 Buick LeSabre?
A: Before installing a new inflatable restraint Steering Wheel module coil, the sir system needs to be disabled. Vehicle wheels should point straight ahead while either the steering column anti rotation pin (J 42640) is present or the ignition switch stays on lock to keep the air bag clock spring assembly correctly centered. Begin by removing the Steering Wheel from the Steering Shaft then pull the tilt lever straight out (optional) before removing the 2 torx(R) head screws on the lower trim cover and the 2 torx(R) head screws securing the upper trim cover. Remove both the retaining ring and the air bag clock spring by detaching wire harness straps from the Steering Wheel column wire harness. When changing air bag clock springs users must dispose of the old unit. Before assembly check wheel alignment and confirm placement of the steering column anti rotation pin (J 42640) or an ignition switch set to the lock position. Position the newly installed air bag clock spring assembly toward the center and directly match it with the turn signal cancel cam assembly's horn tower. Install the air bag clock spring onto the Steering Shaft assembly while placing the retaining ring tightly into its groove. Remove the centering tab from the new air bag clock spring before installing the upper trim cover using 2 torx(R) head screws secured at 1.5 n.m (13 lb in). Attach the lower trim cover by inserting 2 torx(R) head screws followed by screw tightening to 1.5 n.m (13 lb in). Ensure both cover tabs connect correctly. Vehicles with tilt columns should slide the tilt lever handle into position before locking it into the steering column. The Steering Wheel can then be installed onto the Steering Shaft. Finally, enable the sir system.
