- Q: What Tools Are Required to Service and Repair Brake Calipers on 2005 Buick Terraza?A: The tools required to service and repair the brake caliper are: caliper piston seal installer (J 35777). Start with removing the brake caliper, making sure not to put fingers in front of the caliper piston(s) if compressed air is applied, as the piston(s) may forcefully come out and cause harm to a person. Pad the interior of the caliper housing with clean cloths during piston removal, using only as much air to help ease the pistons out of the bores. Check the Brake Caliper Piston for scoring, nicks, corrosion, and worn chrome plating, and replace the components if there are any problems. Use a flat-blade tool to remove Brake Caliper Piston boot and a small piece of wood or plastic tool to pull out piston seal from groove on the bore of caliper without using tools, to avoid causing damage. Check the caliper bore and groove for seal for scoring, nicks, corrosion, or wear, polishing out light corrosion with crocus cloth, if required. Change the caliper if corrosion may not be removed. Inspect the brake caliper bolt boots for cuts, tears or degeneration and the caliper bolts for corrosion or damage, replacing them with fresh ones without attempting to polish off corrosion. Take off the bleeder valve cap and bleeder valve from the brake housing caliper, clean all the parts by using denatured alcohol, and dry them using filtered non-lubricated compressed air. Blow out all passages in the caliper housing and bleeder valve with non-lubricated compressed air that is forced through a filter. For assembly, install the bleeder valve and cap back on the caliper housing, lubricate new piston seal with delco supreme ii® gm p/n 12377967 or canadian p/n 992667, or equivalent dot-3 brake fluid and install into the caliper bore grooves with twist to view external texture. Apply some lubricant to the Brake Caliper Piston and boot, slide it into the bore and push the piston down to the bottom. Finally, mount the caliper boot into the counterbore caliper housing using the caliper piston seal installer (J 35777) and install the caliper.
