The first step to replace the left side (LP1 LY7) exhaust manifold heat shield is to remove the intermediate Steering Shaft. You should start by removing the upper bolts on the exhaust manifold heat shield and then raise and support the vehicle. You must first remove the lower heat shield bolt then detach the center intermediate shaft from its connection to the lower intermediate shaft to gain enough room for shield extraction. To proceed with exhaust manifold heat shield removal you should also detach the upper insulator from the oil level indicator tube and lower insulator from the oil level indicator and exhaust gasket if required. When installing the shield begin with the oil level indicator and exhaust gasket by putting their lower insulator in place followed by inserting the upper insulator on the oil level indicator tube if required. Place the exhaust manifold heat shield and fasten its lower bolt but do not finalize the tightness. Slightly lower the vehicle then put in the upper bolts before tightening them to 10 nm (89 inch lbs.). After raising the vehicle to its proper height use it to apply the same torque specification on the lower bolt. End the repair by reconnecting the center intermediate shaft with the lower intermediate shaft then lower the vehicle.
