2005 Cadillac Escalade EXT Brake Line Parts and Q&A
Q: How to replace the brake line using the J 45405 Pipe Flaring Tool Kit on 2005 Cadillac Escalade EXT?
A: For replacing the brake pipe, use J 45405 Pipe Flaring Tool Kit and make sure to use double-walled steel brake pipe in order to avoid brake system failure. Start by examining the area of the brake pipe which is to be repaired and after this, remove it from retainers. Select a sectioning point if required, where there is enough clearance for the J 45405 steering rod, and do not mount at bends. Measure the length of the pipe to be removed, with added pipe flares. 6.35 mm (0.250 in) for 4.76 mm (3/16 in) diameter pipe, and 9.50 mm (0.374 in) for 6.35 mm (1/4 in) diameter pipe, and 12.67 mm (0.499 in) for 7.94 mm (5/16 in) diameter pipe. Cut the brake pipe to the measured length using the single-action pipe cutter of the J 45405, remove the sectioned part. Choose the right brake pipe and tube nuts and remove its nylon coating from the end that will be flared by using the coating stripping tool that is from the J.45405 and do not gouge the metal surface. The next step is chamfer the inside and outside diameter of the pipe with de-burring tool from the J 45405 and install tube nuts. Clean the brake pipe and the J 45405 of all contaminants, loosen the die clamping screw, and perform the installation of the die halves into the die cage. Push the prepared end of the pipe into the dies, tighten the clamping screw, and employ the forming mandrel in order to flare it. Flare diameter check post-flaring: 6.74 7.10 mm (0.265-0.279 in) for 4.76 mm (3/16 in), 8.57-9.27 mm (0.344-0.358 in) for 6.35 mm (1/4 in), and 10.42-10.79 mm (0.410-0.425 in) for 7.94 mm (5/16 in) diameter of pipe. Bend the new pipe with a brake pipe bending tool if needed, keep a distance of 19 mm (3/4 in) from moving components, and apply appropriate unions to install the pipe. Secure the brake pipe to retainers if released, bleed the hydraulic brake system, and lastly, inspecting for leaks by starting the engine and applying brakes with help.
