2005 Chevrolet Cobalt Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: What tools are required to replace the water pump on a 2.2L L61 engine on 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt?
A: To update the Water Pump on a 2.2l l61 engine you need one Water Pump holding tool j43651. Start by uninstalling the Exhaust Manifold for automatic transmission cars before draining the cooling system fluid. Place your vehicle on stands then take off the right front wheel and wheel to reach the front fender liner for replacement. Insert the Water Pump holding tool (J 43651) onto the Water Pump sprocket and bolt it to the engine front cover using the access plate screws. Disconnect the sprocket bolts first and then take out the bolt securing the engine to the Water Pump. End your work by separating the bolt joining the engine front cover to the Water Pump. Eliminate the Water Pump connection from the Thermostat Housing pipe as you use two wrenches to detach the Water Pump's attachment to the engine block. Remove the Water Pump afterward. Fix the Water Pump sprocket hub by inserting a threaded stud and aligning it before installing the Water Pump unit. Fasten the 2 bolts to the Water Pump and engine block using a torque of 20 nm (15 ft. Lbs.). Position the feed pipe onto the Thermostat Housing and base bolt at the engine front. Tighten both bolts to 20 nm from the feed pipe side. Install the Water Pump sprocket bolts then take off the threaded stud before placing the final bolt and setting torque to 10 nm. Attach the Water Pump sprocket access plate onto the Timing Cover with metal bolts and secure them at 10 nm (18 inch lbs.). Put back the front fender liner, right front wheel and tire before placing the Exhaust Manifold if needed. Also put liquid into the cooling system.
