Q: How to replace the oil pan on 2005 Chevrolet Malibu?
A: In order to replace the Oil Pan, depower the batteries by disconnecting the negative cable, install the engine support fixture and raise and support the vehicle. Install an appropriate drain pan under the Oil Pan Drain Plug, remove it to drain the engine oil and install them back snugly. It is helpful to remove the Starter, oil filter adapter, and air conditioning (A/C) compressor bolts to reposition the compressor out of the way. Next are the engine mount bracket bolts that you remove, the transaxle brace bolts when removed, and the transaxle to Oil Pan brace bolts if so equipped. Take out the flexplate Torque Converter bolts and lower the vehicle. Unplug the engine harness ground nut and wiring harness grounds from the transaxle stud and back the transaxle studs and bolts off of but do not remove it from the car. Raise the engine and transaxle slightly with the help of the engine support fixture and then raise and support it one more time. Take off the Oil Pan bolts, split the engine and transaxle reinforcement approximately 13 mm (½ inch) and make sure that the Oil Pan clears the boss on the transaxle and then remove the Oil Pan. If the Oil Pan cannot be extracted, lower down the vehicle and continue washing as earlier explained until it can be extracted. Replace the old Oil Pan Gasket and clean off the sealing surfaces. For installation, sealer is to be applied to the front cover/block mating area, crankcase rear main bearing cap, and then install a new Oil Pan Gasket, and Oil Pan. Tighten the Oil Pan bolts to specified torque, lower the vehicle and with using engine support fixture, lower the engine, transaxle. Tighten the transaxle studs and bolts, then install the engine wiring harness ground and clip, tightening the nuts to the required torque. Lift and secure the vehicle once more to bolt the flexplate to Torque Converter bolts and also the transaxle to Oil Pan brace bolts if the car has them. Mount the engine mount bracket and all related bolts to their torque requirements. Replace the A/C Compressor, oil filter adapter, and Starter, torqueing the Oil Pan Drain Plug to the required torque. Lastly, deplane the vehicle, unfasten the engine support fixture, pour oil into the crankcase, reconnect the negative Battery Cable, start the vehicle, and look for any leaks.
