- Q: How to replace the outer CV Joint and seal on 2006 Buick Lucerne?A: To replace the wheel drive shaft outer joint and seal, start with the use of side cutters to dispose-off the large retainer seal clamp from the CV joint and the small retainer seal clamp from the halfshaft bar. Remove the outboard seal from CV joint outer race and move it away from the bar . Remove any grease from the inner race of CV joint and with the help of J 8059, Snap Ring Pliers apply pressure on the ears of the retaining ring of the CV joint to spread them before removing the CV joint assembly from the bar. Pry off the seal from the bar and carefully hit the CV joint cage with a brass drift and hammer to remove all chrome alloy balls. Put the CV joint cage and the inner race at right angles to the outer race with windows stripping over the lands of the outer race before stripping them off. Rotate the inner race by 90 degrees so that it points towards the cage windows and pivot it into the cage. Clean the inner and outer race assemblies, CV joint cage, and balls with cleaning solvent and make sure to eliminate the old grease and dirt from them and finally dry the parts out. During assembly insert a new swage ring , on the small end of the joint seal and slide the two on the halfshaft bar. Position Drive Axle Swage Ring Clamp (J 41048) in a vise to secure the assembly (no pinch points on the seal). Tighten the bolts of the alternator J 41048 alternates until snug, and then tighten each bolt 180 degrees at a time ratchet wrench. Put a light coat of grease from the service kit on the ball grooves on the inner and the outer races and put in the inner race at 90 deg at the cage. Line up the cage and inner race so that it laces with the outside race and inject the balls, filling the CV joint full of grease while making sure the outboard seal is the proper shape. And finally, trim the large diameter of the outboard seal over the CV joint outer race , and use Drive Axle Seal Clamp Pliers (J 35910), a breaker bar , and a torque wrench to make the large seal retaining clamp tight to 176 Nm (130 ft. lbs.), verify the gap readings on the clamp ear to verify that it is at 2.60 mm (0.102 inch).
