- Q: How to replace the inner CV Joint and seal on 2006 Buick Lucerne?A: All tools required to replace the wheel drive shaft inner joint with its seal include you'll need drive axle seal clamp pliers (J 35910), drive axle swage ring clamp (J 41048), and snap ring pliers (J 8059). Check the transmission sealing surface first for corrosion then clean it with a 320 grit cloth if any damage is present. Cut the swage ring with a hand grinder before discarding the large seal retaining clamp with side cutters but avoid damaging the inboard seal. The separation of the halfshaft inboard seal from the trilobal tripot bushing makes it possible to slid the seal away from the joint. Pull the housing off the tripot joint spider then dispose of both the trilobal tripot bushing and spacer rings and inboard boot. Employ cleaning solvent to remove all old grease following wire brush cleaning of the halfshaft bar and needle rollers, tripot balls and housing. Check for damage on the tripot joint spider assembly as well as the housing and needle rollers. The new small swage ring needs installation on both the joint seal before it can be set into place on the halfshaft bar. Place the inboard end of the halfshaft assembly within j 41048 which must be secured using a vise while making sure the seal stays free from pinching. Tighten each bolt individually. Throughout the operation use j 8059 to install the spacer ring on the halfshaft bar followed by sliding the tripot joint spider assembly toward it. Fill the halfshaft inboard seal with grease before repacking the housing properly and flattening the trilobal tripot bushing against the housing face. Position the larger seal retaining clamp over the inboard halfshaft seal then install the new trilobal tripot bushing. Place the housing over the tripot joint spider assembly while checking that the halfshaft inboard seal keeps its proper shape. Position the joint assembly at the specified vehicle dimension using j 35910 to crimp the large seal retaining clamp on the halfshaft inboard seal, tripot housing until the specified torque is achieved. The last step involves checking the clamp ear gap dimension before making any needed modifications.
