2006 Buick Rainier Air Bag Clockspring Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the Air Bag Clockspring in the Steering Wheel on 2006 Buick Rainier?
A: The replacement of the air bag clock spring begins with sir system deactivation and a center position adjustment of the Steering Column. The first step will be to remove the Steering Wheel from the column then the procedure continues by removing the trim covers from above and below. Start by examining the Steering Column for accident-related damage unless necessary and then remove the wire harness strap next. A Steering Wheel with pad control requires complete removal of the air bag clock spring and wire harness assembly. Either the coil needs to be removed by itself or as part of the complete wire harness assembly removal process. Steering wheels with pad control require removing the wire harness assembly before using snap ring pliers to extract the retaining ring for the Steering Wheel module coil removal. The wave washer needs removal in certain cases. Installation requires placement of the wave washer along with correct positioning of the block tooth on the Steering Shaft assembly at the 12 o'clock direction. It is essential to carry out centering operations on the air bag clock spring before reuse. A pre-centered new coil must stay with its centering tab until final installation. Run the air bag clock spring along the horn tower by sliding it through the shaft lock device or cam orientation plate before putting it onto the Steering Shaft assembly. Keep the centering tab for later disposal. Securely install the retaining ring using snap ring pliers so it can properly lock into the race and upper shaft assembly groove. Install the pad-controlled Steering Wheel by first connecting the wire harness assembly followed by wire harness strap installation then upper and lower trim covers before installing the Steering Wheel to its column. Enable the sir system afterward.
