2006 Chevrolet Cobalt Steering Shaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the intermediate steering shaft on 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt?
A: Vehicle maintenance starts with vehicle support and left front tire removal before intermediate Steering Shaft replacement. Begin by taking off the intermediate shaft to steering gear pinch bolt (which does not exist) and toss it away afterward disconnecting the intermediate shaft from the steering gear. Lower the vehicle and bring the steering wheel to straight forward alignment while securing the Steering Column to stop sir system damage. Pull out the ignition key then maneuver the steering wheel clockwise until a lock position is achieved. Place alignment marks on the intermediate shaft Steering Column interface before you detach its pinch bolt (N/A) at the column to dispose of it. By removing the intermediate shaft from the Steering Column shaft you can free it up to unseat the intermediate shaft seal while also pulling it out from the dash. Then pull the intermediate shaft/seal from the vehicle. Before installing your new intermediate shaft apply the pre-scribed alignment indications to the part then insert the intermediate shaft/seal through the front dash opening while verifying the seal positioning using the engine side view. Before installation, use a combination of pushing, squeezing and twisting motions to seat the intermediate shaft seal completely. After that, align the printing on the intermediate shaft with the Steering Column shaft's mark before uniting these components. To install the intermediate shaft without pre-marked alignment points, position the road wheels directly ahead and the steering wheel straight ahead prior to attaching the intermediate shaft between the steering gear and Steering Column shaft. The bolt head should face the lh wheel well opening during installation. You should tighten the new intermediate shaft to Steering Column pinch bolt to 34 nm (25 ft. Lbs.) before you connect the intermediate shaft to the steering gear. Finish the installation by tightening the new intermediate shaft to steering gear pinch bolt to the same value. After installing the left front wheel you should verify that steering wheel alignment is accurate. Adjustments can be made by removing the intermediate shaft pinch bolt near the Steering Column followed by disconnecting the shaft before readjustment then reconnection. Reinstall a new intermediate shaft pinch bolt (N/A) and tighten it to 34 nm (25 ft. Lbs.).
