- Q: How to Service and Repair the CV Joint Boot on 2006 Chevrolet Impala?A: Start your constant velocity joint boot service and repair work by assembling these necessary tools: three tools required for CV Joint boot repairs include drive axle swage ring clamp (41048) and snap ring pliers (8059) and drive axle seal clamp pliers (35910). Drive axle swage ring clamp (41048), snap ring pliers (8059), and drive axle seal clamp pliers (35910). Cut the large seal retaining clamp from the CV Joint by using a side cutter then dispose of it. Cutting the wheel drive shaft inboard seal will damage its sealing surface thus you should avoid this practice. Cut the swage ring to remove it by using a hand grinder. The halfshaft outboard seal must be separated from the CV Joint outer race to allow the seal's movement down the length of the halfshaft bar. Clean the CV Joint inner race while spreading its race retaining ring ears with snap ring pliers. Unattach the CV Joint assembly from the halfshaft bar then dispose of the worn outboard seal. A brass drift and a hammer serve to tilt the CV Joint cage so you can remove all six chrome alloy balls. Wash the CV Joint inner and outer race assemblies, CV Joint cage and chrome alloy balls with cleaning solvent followed by drying all parts before inspecting for damage and replacing any broken components. A wire brush should clean the halfshaft bar until all rust in the seal mounting area disappears. Start assembly by placing the new swaged ring on the outboard seal's neck before sliding the outboard seal over the halfshaft bar and positioning it correctly in the seal groove. Swage the ring through the drive axle swage ring clamp where proper alignment produces a secure fit that allows you to inspect the ring's lip integrity. First coat ball grooves on inner and outer races with a thin layer of grease then set the inner race inside the cage before correctly positioning it to the outer race. Push the CV Joint onto the halfshaft bar until the retaining ring fully seats while packing the component with grease and inserting chrome balls. Crimple the large-diameter outboard seal using the specified torque setting of the drive axle seal clamp pliers while making sure the clamp ear gap meets specification.
