To change the wheel drive shaft inner joint and seal, assemble the set of required tools: snap ring pliers (J 8059), drive axle seal clamp pliers (J 35910), and drive axle swage ring clamp (J 41048). Disengage the swage ring from the halfshaft bar using a hand grinder without destroying the halfshaft bar. Cut off the large seal retaining clamp at the tripot joint with side cutters and get rid of it. Pry out the inboard seal from the trilobal tripot bushing at the large diameter and slide the seal off the end of the joint along the halfshaft bar. This involves removing the housing of the tripot joint spider and the halfshaft bar, followed by the spacer rings and the tripot boot using snap ring pliers (J 8059) and throwing the boot and the rings away. Making sure to clean the halfshaft bar using a wire brush to remove rust and check for damage in the needle rollers, needle bearings and in the trunnion with a replacement with the right kit for every part found to be faulty. For installation, insert the new small swage ring on the small end of the joint seal and slide the both onto the halfshaft bar. Place the small end of the joint seal into the groove of the joint seal on the halfshaft bar. Mounting a (Drive Axle Swage ring clamp J 41048) in a vise, align the inboard end of the halfshaft assembly with nothing pinched on halfshaft inboard seal. Tighten the bolts by hand until snug and align the half shaft inboard seal, half shaft bar and swage ring and by the use of a ratchet wrench rank each bolt of j 41048 by 180-degree turns. If available, put on the spacer ring into the groove of the halfshaft bar using snap ring pliers (J 8059), then push on the tripot joint spider assembly on the halfshaft bar. Put grease from the service kit into the half shaft inboard seal and repack the housing with the trilobal tripot bushing flush against the face of one of the housing. Mount new trilo-tripot bushing to the case, place bigger new seal retaining clamp on halfshaft inboard seal, and slide the case over the tripot joint spider assembly. Push the large halfshaft diameter of the inboard seal over the trilobal tripot bushing and align the lip of the seal in the groove. Carefully use a thin flat blunt tool to equalize pressure, and after the pressure in equalized, place the joint assembly at the correct dimension of the vehicle depending on the engine type. Align the halfshaft inboard seal, tripot housing, and large seal retaining clamp, crimping the seal retaining clamp with drive axle seal clamp pliers (J 35910) of 176 n.m (130 lb ft). Confirm the gap dimension at the clamp ear and carry on with tightening until a gap dimension of 2.60 mm (0.102 in) is achieved, and fully stroke the joint a number of times to distribute the grease.
