2007 Chevrolet Impala Ball Joint Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the lower ball joint on 2007 Chevrolet Impala?
A: To change the lower Ball Joint start by raising and stabilizing the vehicle before taking off the wheel and tire. Make a pilot hole through the rivets before drilling all remaining holes. You need both a hammer and a chisel for dish out any rivet heads left in place. To continue take the cotter pin off the ball stud and turn down the ball stud nut. Set the Ball Joint/stud separator (J 41820) over the ball stud and lower Control Arm before turning the ball stud nut to the left for separation between the ball stud and Steering Knuckle. You will need to remove j 41820 separator first before accessing the ball stud nut and threadless ball stud on the lower Control Arm. Place the new ball stud on the lower Control Arm first before mounting the bolts toward the ground. Fasten the new ball stud nuts onto their threaded positions at 68 n.m (50 lb ft) torque. Leverage the ball stud onto the Steering Knuckle and secure it with a torque setting of 55 n.m minimum. Begin installing the ball stud castle nut only by applying a minimum torque of 20 n.m (15 lb ft) plus 120 degrees to it. Throughout the process keep the ball stud nut slots out of alignment with the cotter pin hole. Adjust the ball stud castle nut when needed to bring the steering components into their correct position. Keep the cotter pin edges separate from both the abs wheel speed sensor and ABS Sensor connector as well as the drive axle. Fit the new cotter pin then bend its ends before reattaching the wheel and tire. Also lower the vehicle and inspect wheel alignment.
