How to replace the rear axle shaft on 2007 Buick Rainier?

A mechanic should begin by raising the vehicle then unmounting the tire and wheel assembly before proceeding to remove the brake caliper and rear Wheel Speed Sensor. You must first remove the rear axle housing cover together with its gasket before taking out the pinion shaft locking bolt. The procedure for axles without locking Differential requires complete removal of the pinion shaft yet axles equipped with locking Differential need the shaft to be partially withdrawn to contact the housing before continuing with the installation process. Twist the c-lock using a screwdriver or similar tool until it reaches the thrust block position before pushing the Axle Shaft flange toward the Differential to remove the c-lock on the button end. Do not rotate the shaft to prevent alignment issues. Insert the new Axle Shaft inside the housing of the rear axle by allowing the splines to mate with the Differential side gear. The c-lock goes on the button end of the Axle Shaft without locking Differential but with locking Differential keep the pinion shaft partially withdrawn while positioning the c-lock directly on the Axle Shaft end against the thrust block surface. When the Differential gear seat is fully engaged by pulling on the shaft flange use the new pinion shaft locking bolt to install it through the Differential case hole. Tighten the bolt to 36 n.m (27 lb ft) for 8.0/8.6 inch axle models or to 50 n.m (37 lb ft) for 9.5 ld inch axle models. After replacing the brake caliper and rear Wheel Speed Sensor and installing the tire and wheel assembly you must lower the vehicle while adding the correct axle lubricant. Finally replace the housing cover along with the gasket and then install new axle lubricant.
