2007 Chevrolet Malibu Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the front suspension coil springs on 2007 Chevrolet Malibu?
A: Service and repair of the front suspension coil spring begins with placing the strut assembly in the strut spring compressor that has the model number j 45400. Use the strut spring compressor (J 45400) to compress the spring while simultaneously adjusting the compressing arms until they reach the outermost coils of the spring and release tension in the upper strut mount. A safe support system for the strut must be in place before starting to remove the strut shaft nut. Use a wrench to remove the strut shaft nut as you maintain your grip on the strut shaft. Then lower both the strut and the strut spring compressor (J 45400) from underneath. Check for damage in the upper strut mount assembly and mount bearing before doing any replacement work. Use the strut spring compressor (J 45400) to extract the upper spring seat and insulator from the spring while examining both items for damage to determine if replacement is needed. Relieve spring tension with the strut spring compressor (J 45400) before removing the spring and inspect it for any damage which requires replacement. After inspecting the strut shaft for damage, replace the dust shield and jounce bumper assembly while also checking and replacing the lower spring seat insulator. Use the strut spring compressor (J 45400) to put in the spring while maintaining equipment level. Afterward, apply uniform compression to the spring using the strut spring compressor (J 45400). Lay the dust shield assembly on the strut shaft then slide it to the upper travel limit. Insert the jounce bumper after that but before sliding the dust shield assembly onto the strut shaft. Pull the strut through the coil spring and strut spring compressor (J 45400) so the bottom spring coil rests in the spring seat pocket. Put the upper spring insulator and spring seat on top of the coil spring before adding the bearing and strut mount on top of the spring seat. Fasten the upper strut shaft nut with torque setting of 70 n.m (52 lb ft). Start by using the strut spring compressor (J 45400) to release spring pressure and afterward remove the strut assembly from the tool before installing it.
