2008 Chevrolet Equinox Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Rack and Pinion steering gear (HPS) on 2008 Chevrolet Equinox?
A: In order to change the Rack And Pinion (HPS), the first step is to detach the Rack And Pinion outer tie rods from the steering knuckles. Then remove the intermediate steering shaft lower bolt and put drain pans under the vehicle if necessary. Take off the transaxle mount bolt and the transaxle mount bolts, placing the transaxle mount to the side, but without re-using the old o-ring seals. Remove the power steering Rack And Pinion inlet hose as well as the power steering cooler hose from the power steering Rack And Pinion, then loosen power steering Rack And Pinion hose bracket bolt and power steering Rack And Pinion bolts. The power steering Rack And Pinion can also then be extracted through the left wheel house area, transferring needed components. For installation, locate the power steering Rack And Pinion into the vehicle through the left wheel house area, put in the power steering Rack And Pinion bolts and tighten to 110 n.m (81 lb ft) and power steering Rack And Pinion hose bracket bolt tightened to 9 nm (80 lb in). Remove the power steering "creamer" o-ring seals and replace them with the new ones provided. Then join the power steering Rack And Pinion inlet hose and the power steering fluid cooler hose to the power steering Rack And Pinion using 25 n-m (18 lb-ft) torque. Put on the transaxle mount and the transaxle mount bolts which should be tightened to 50 n.m (37 lb ft) after which the transaxle mount bolt should be tightened up to 110 n.m (81 lb ft). Take off the drain pans and clean any extra fluids from the vehicle, then you fit the intermediate steering shaft upper bolt. Finally, join the Rack And Pinion outer tie rods with the steering knuckles, fill and bleed the power steering system, then front toe properly.
