2008 Chevrolet Impala Timing Chain Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the timing chain and sprockets on 2008 Chevrolet Impala?
A: Starting the replacement process requires professionals to remove engine front cover first. Fit the crankshaft timing mark to match the tensioner's bottom timing mark and adjust the Camshaft gear's timing mark to the top tensioner's timing mark. Remove Camshaft sprocket bolts first before taking out the Timing Chain, camshaft, crankshaft sprockets and ending with the Timing Chain Tensioner bolt removal to extract the Timing Chain Tensioner. The first step for installation involves installing the crankshaft sprocket followed by applying prelube to its thrust surface. In the installation process fit the Timing Chain Tensioner along with its bolts before torquing them to 21 n.m (15 lb ft). Use the en-47719 tensioner compressor (EN-47719) to complete the tensioner's collapse before placing its retaining pin into the specified hole. Install the Timing Chain to the Crankshaft Gear while the timing mark on the bottom of the Timing Chain Tensioner matches the crankshaft timing mark. Keep holding the Camshaft sprocket while the Timing Chain drops down next to it for installation. Position the Camshaft gear timing mark in alignment with the above tensioner timing mark and position the Camshaft sprocket dowel against the Camshaft dowel hole. Use the mounting bolts to draw the Camshaft sprocket onto the Camshaft. Torque each bolt to 16 n.m (12 lb ft). Before installation apply engine oil to the crankshaft and Camshaft sprockets and place the engine front cover into position.
