2008 Chevrolet Malibu Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Engine Control Module (ECM) on 2008 Chevrolet Malibu?
A: The Engine Control Module (ECM) replacement process requires an off ignition position to protect the internal components while working on power connections such as battery cables and pcm/ecm/tcm pigtail. Touching the metal case of the control module with battery voltage will cause damage while avoiding contact with connector pins and soldered components protects against electrostatic discharge. The connector surfaces of control modules must be free from debris before service whereas proper installation of connector gaskets needs verification to stop contamination entry. The scan tool allows you to record the remaining engine oil life which must be programmed into the replacement module because not doing so will cause it to default to 5,000 km (3,000 mi) from the last change. The technician first disconnects the negative Battery Cable before removing both the body wiring harness electrical connector and the engine wiring harness electrical connectors from the ecm. Take out the clips holding the wiring harnesses to the ecm bracket before you lift the retainers to detach them while moving the ecm toward the engine to remove it. The ecm must be positioned under the bracket base before pushing it toward the battery until it snaps into the correct position with the retainers for security. The engine wiring harness electrical connectors must be connected to the ecm after which the engine wiring harness clips should mount to the ecm bracket followed by connecting the body wiring harness electrical connector to the ecm while you reattach the negative Battery Cable. Finally, program the ecm.
