    Q:
How to service the Engine Control Module (ECM) on Cadillac Escalade ESV? Posted by Customer
    A:
The Engine Control Module (ECM) service requires either ecm replacement or eeprom programming. Verify that the replacement ecm matches the unit specification before you eliminate the broken ecm for new service ecm installation. Power should be cut off from the ignition while handling control module connectors and disconnecting or reconnecting power because this prevents damage to internal components. Letting the metal case of the control module touch battery voltage during servicing will result in damage to the system. Users must avoid touching the circuit board solder connections and connector pins because electrostatic discharge can occur when cleaning the control module connector surfaces and their adjacent area. Check that the connector gaskets of the control module are securely in place to defend against contaminants. The programming of the new control module should be performed while recording the current engine oil life percentage because a missing record will set the oil life to 100 percent thus requiring an oil change at 5,000 km (3,000 mi) since the last change. You should initiate removal by obtaining necessary data from the scan tool about engine oil life percentage through recording it and following up with negative Battery Cable disconnection. Disconnect upper and lower electrical connector retainers first and then remove the connectors from the ecm before removing the ecm by unclipping its retainer tabs from the bracket. During installation push the ecm into place after you put the bottom tabs from the ecm into the bracket. Reconnect the negative Battery Cable while reconnecting upper and lower electrical connectors which should have their specific retainers back in place. Programming of the ecm needs to occur if a new unit was installed.

    Q:
How to service the Engine Control Module (ECM) on Chevrolet Express 2500? Posted by Customer
    A:
Service of the Engine Control Module (ECM) requires a new part interchange or eeprom programming. Verify that the new ecm matches the requirements before you remove the faulty ecm to install the service ecm model. Power losses must be implemented through a complete ignition shut-off during the handling of control module connectors as well as power disconnect and reconnect operations to shield internal module damage. Keeping the metal case of the control module away from battery voltage ensures its protection from damage. Electrostatic discharge damage can be prevented by avoiding touch of connector pins or circuit board soldered components and cleaning all control module connector surfaces. Check that control module connector gaskets are properly installed to block contaminates from entering the module area. A replacement control module requires programming and recording engine oil life remains or else the system will set the oil to be changed at 5,000 km (3,000 mi) from the last change. Operating a scan tool enables you to retrieve the remaining engine oil life percentage which should then be documented. Disconnect the negative Battery Cable as well as the engine wiring harness electrical connectors which belong to the ecm. To detach the ecm from the bracket the user needs to release tabs on the ecm bracket. To install the system position the ecm into its bracket so the ecm bracket tabs can completely connect. Reestablish the connection between the ecm and engine wiring harness electric connectors and the negative Battery Cable. New ecm installation requires ecm programming followed by the use of a scan tool for setting the engine oil life.

    Q:
Why is it important to record the remaining engine oil life and automatic transmission fluid life for the 2009 Chevrolet Equinox? Posted by Customer
    A:
The replacement module must be programmed with these values; otherwise, they will default to 100 percent, necessitating an oil change at 5000 km (3,000 mi) and transmission fluid change at 83000 km (50,000 mi) from the last service.
