2009 Buick Lucerne Automatic Transmission Filter Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Replace the Automatic Transmission Filter and Fluid on 2009 Buick Lucerne?
A: The first step to replace automatic transmission fluid and filter includes lifting and supporting the vehicle. A drain pan should rest below the transaxle Oil Pan. The proper technique for removing Oil Pan bolts consists of minimizing damage to sealing surfaces to stop oil leakage. The Oil Pan bolts need to be removed from front and side components before slowly loosening the rear bolts to about four turns. Use a rubber mallet to tap the Oil Pan gently while observing the fluid drain process before inspection of fluid coloring. Once all the Oil Pan bolts are removed successfully detach the Oil Pan together with its gasket. Place a long screwdriver against the oil filter neck to pry it away from its seal while inspecting the oil filter seal for any signs of damage or wear. The j 6125-1b (Slide Hammer) together with the j 23129 (Universal Seal Remover) can be used to remove the seal when needed. New seals require application of a tiny amount of j 36850 (Transmission Assembly Lubricant) or petroleum jelly during installation. Manual installation of a fresh filter into the case requires attention to Oil Pan gaskets which can be used again unless you detect seal surface damage. The simultaneous installation of Oil Pan and gasket should be done before tightening the Oil Pan bolts to 14 nm (125 lb in). The vehicle should be lowered as you fill it with the recommended transaxle fluid quantity. Check the fluid level inside the transmission while also inspecting the gasket of the Oil Pan for possible leakage.
