- Q: How to replace the rear Drive Shaft equipped with automatic transmission and rear wheel drive (RWD) on 2009 Cadillac CTS?A: Vehicle owners should first raise their car for propeller shaft replacement work on vehicles with automatic transmission and rear wheel drive (RWD). The first step is to remove the rear mufflers and the floor pan mid tunnel insulator. You should remove only the propeller shaft coupler-to-transmission flange bolts and the propeller shaft and rear differential flange connection but keep the coupler fixed to the propeller shaft. Any broken or seriously worn bolts, nuts or washers require immediate replacement by removing them from service and using new components. Begin by taking away the bolts and nuts from the drive flange and propeller shaft coupler transmission flange and then finish the task by obtaining the differential flange bolts , nuts , and washers from propeller shaft coupler and differential drive flange . Fluidly support the propeller shaft with a jack stand at its center support bearing while keeping any present shim in position to achieve proper driveshaft angle. To remove the propeller shaft from the vehicle the center support bearing bolts must be unfastened. To install the assembly apply gm p/n 1051344 (Canadian P/N 993037) lubricant on both the transmission drive flange and rear differential drive flange pilot shaft. Installation of the propeller shaft assembly needs assistance while maintaining proper alignment between the yellow and orange paint dots for drive line vibration prevention. The center support bearing needs installation before its bolts must secure to 50 nm (37 lb ft). Denatured alcohol should be used to wipe clean the propeller shaft-to-flange nuts and bolts before applying threadlocker gm p/n 12345493 (Canadian P/N 10953488). Allow this threadlocker to cure for about 10 minutes. Secure both the propeller shaft bolts with washers through the assembly before securing the propeller shaft coupler-to-differential flange nuts to 85 nm (63 lb ft). The floor pan mid tunnel insulator along with rear mufflers should be reinstalled after you finish installing the bolts with washers and nuts which require 85 nm (63 lb ft) torque.
