- Q: How to replace the rear wheel drive shaft inner CV boot on 2009 Cadillac CTS?A: To remove the rear wheel drive shaft inner joint boot, one has to take out the rear shaft wheel from the vehicle and hold it in a soft jawed vise taking care not to cut in the inboard or outboard boot so that sealing surface is not marred. Take off the boot clamps and remove using a side cutter, then remove the boot form the CV Joint and wheel drive shaft. Remove the cap using a hammer and a punch; in case of contamination in the inner components, dispose the rear wheel drive shaft assembly because the components cannot be serviced. Clean the grease with the inner race, cage and balls and remove the joint race retaining ring with snap ring pliers and pull the inner CV Joint assembly using hammer and brass drift. Examine the inner CV Joint before assemblage follows. Mount the inner boot and clamp, and insert the wheel drive shaft after pouring the lubricant from the service pack into the boot. Always make sure that the boot is snugly installed on the groove wheel drive shaft and then apply a block of wood or brass drift to fit the CV Joint on the wheel drive shaft. In snap ring pliers, fit the new retaining ring for the CV Joint while making sure all interior parts are lubre. Put the remaining lubricant on the ball bearings and cage of the CV Joint and clamp it between the bolts and washers before applying the crimp. Check the boot shape and damage, adjust as required. Close the inner and outer boot clamps using the j 42572 - pliers, until the gross gap a= 1.0 (0.040 in). Clean the cap using alcohol-type solvent and air dry it, and subsequently apply a 3 mm (0.118 in) bead on the inner diameter of the CV Joint face. Line up the holes for the mounting fasteners in the cap and CV Joint, then screw the CV Joint cap on with the automatic installer j 22928-b . The inner joint needs to be rotated 4 or 5 times to spread the lubricant, and also test its performance; there should be some leftover lubricant wiped from wheel drive shaft assembly before attaching the wheel drive shaft.
