- Q: How to replace the rear wheel drive shaft inner CV boot on 2008 Cadillac CTS?A: In order to replace Rear Wheel Drive Shaft Inner Joint Boot first you should remove wheel drive shaft from the vehicle. Start by unscrewing the bolt and washer assemblies from the wheel drive shaft and wrap a shop towel around it and fasten it horizontally in a vise. Take the large boot clamps off the inner joint boot using a side cutter and slide the boot away towards the outer joint. Remove the grease cover of the joint and clean the inner race, cage, balls and the exposed end of the wheel drive shaft in great detail with solvent to ensure all the old grease and contaminant is lifted off before air-drying parts. Check the damage or wear on the inner race, outer race, cage, as well as at the visible end of the wheel drive shaft. For installation, pump in about 60 percent of the grease from the service kit into the interior joint and distribute the balance at the bottom of the outer race. Push the new boot onto the wheel drive shaft, also have the new small clamp removed in order to have a new small boot clamp mounted on it, and finally use a brass drift and hammer to install the inner joint assembly. Make sure the retaining ring is correctly placed in the groove on the wheel drive shaft, after which the boot must be placed into the inside joint and confirmed to be correctly seated inside, along with the clamp. Crimp the small boot clamp using the J 42572 until the boot tightens to about 1mm gap, wed the boot and the large clamp in joint groove in such a manner that the clamp is not over tightened. Crimp the large boot clamp similarly, and clean the grease cap using alcohol solvent, given by GM P/N 88861422, before applying a 3 mm bead on the inside diameter of the face assembly. Mount the grease cap cover using the J-22928-B and inspect the inner joint for smooth function by keeping the wheel drive shaft vertically and turning it a few times. Finally, reinstall the wheel drive shaft.
