- Q: How to replace the front outer CV Boot and CV Joint on 2009 Cadillac SRX?A: The first step to replace front wheel Drive Shaft's outer joint and boot begins by removing the wheel Drive Shaft from your vehicle. Lay a shop towel on the Axle Shaft before securing the Drive Shaft wheel through a bench vise at a horizontal position. Use a side cutter to remove and discard large and small seal retaining clamps which secure the outer joint seal. After you separate the seal from the joint outer race near its large diameter point slide it carefully away from the joint's surface. Remove all grease from the inner joint race as well as the cage and balls. Secure the outer joint housing horizontally then place a wood block between seal and joint before striking it with a hammer to compress the Axle Shaft retaining clip. The use of a brass drift on the inner race helps when needed. The outer joint removal process requires the discarding of Axle Shaft retaining ring and seal components before parts receive thorough solvent cleaning followed by air drying. Gauge each component of the inner race outside race cage and balls alongside the Axle Shaft for possible damage. Begin assembly by placing the cage with its large radius corners facing upwards and then put the inner race through before making sure it seats properly. Position the inner race ball tracks by aligning them with cage windows before you place a shop towel around the joint outer race splined shaft inside a vertically positioned bench vise. Position the cage and inner race against the outer race where the inner race ring groove must point downward. Start with ball installation by pressing down on the cage to gain access to the ball tracks before checking that balls fit snugly between the ball and inner race. Spray 60 percent of the provided grease onto both ball tracks along with balls and cage and inner race before final installation. Succeed a new small seal retaining clamp and new seal onto the Axle Shaft then apply a new retaining ring. First press the inner race splines onto the axle splines before you smash the axle retaining ring into place while applying force to push the outer joint down the shaft. Use the j 42572 to crimp the small seal retaining clamp into the boot groove following grease insertion. Create a 1mm gap during this procedure. Place the large seal retaining clamp onto the seal then crimp it appropriately while checking the seal for proper shape without damage. Assess outer joint performance through multiple vertical rotations of the wheel Drive Shaft.
