• Q: How to replace the brake master cylinder on 2009 Chevrolet HHR?

  A: Replace the Brake Master Cylinder by performing repeated brake pedal applications followed by releases until the Brake Booster vacuum reserve empties. Disconnect the battery negative cable. First disconnect all wiring harness connectors before moving and removing the electrical center and powertrain control modules from the underhood bracket and then removing the bracket. First disconnect the brake fluid level indicator switch electrical connector before disconnecting the master cylinder secondary brake pipe fitting by covering the fitting with a cap and plugging up the outlet port of the master cylinder to prevent fluid contamination. After disconnecting the master cylinder primary brake pipe fitting one must cap the fitting and plug the outlet port. Disconnect the master cylinder clutch hose quick connect fitting from the clutch master cylinder using proper plugs at both ends to prevent fluid loss. Extract and replace both the master cylinder itself along with the vacuum Brake Booster seal unit. When installing the master cylinder you should bench bleed it before seating it flush to the vacuum Brake Booster seal. Install the master cylinder to the vacuum Brake Booster while connecting the master cylinder clutch hose quick connect fitting if the vehicle has this equipment. Tighten the Brake Master Cylinder nuts until they reach 22 nm (16 lb ft). First attach and tighten the master cylinder primary brake pipe fitting with 21 nm (15 lb ft) torque before attaching and tightening the secondary brake pipe fitting to 21 nm (15 lb ft). Put the underhood electrical center bracket back into place and restore electrical center and powertrain control modules to their position on the bracket. Connect the battery negative cable while executing a hydraulic brake system bleeding process.
