2009 Chevrolet HHR Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the rear Parking Brake Cable (Drum) on 2009 Chevrolet HHR?
A: Before starting the parking brake rear cable (Drum) replacement you must uninstall the console rear trim plate. Start by fully opening the park brake lever and subsequently loosen the adjusting nut to drop tension from the front cable. Raise the supported vehicle while disconnecting the correct rear park brake cable end from its position on the cable equalizer. Follow two steps before removing any components. For current cable use, operate the tab on underbody retainer and remove the cable. Neew cables require release of the underbody from vehicle position. Precise force against the perimeter of the curved retainer on the park brake cable allows it to detach from its bracket position on the rear axle trailing arm pivot before extracting the cable out of the cable guide tube . The vehicle needs its rear tire and wheel assembly detached before taking away the Brake Drum. A flat-bladed screwdriver helps users press the visible retaining tab on the park brake cable fitting so the released side moves back into the backing plate while they rotate the cable to access the other retaining tab for freeing it from the backing plate. Put the cable return spring back into the backing plate opening then guide the cable toward the back before raising it beyond the park brake lever slot for complete disengagement. To properly install the park brake cable start by placing it through the backing plate opening with the cable return spring positioned behind the spring positioning tab. Afterwards push the cable toward the back of the braking shoe while keeping it outside the shoe to position the cable end beyond the park brake lever slot then achieve setup by pulling the cable toward the front. The opening on the lever needs a flat-bladed screwdriver to stop the cable from lifting so insert the cable return spring through the backing plate opening then secure the cable fitting to the backing plate while making sure the retaining tabs stay secure. The procedure requires adjustment of the rear drum brakes followed by Brake Drum installation prior to putting on the wheel and tire assembly. The c-shaped retainer goes into the rear axle trailing arm pivot bracket which leads into the cable guide tube installation. Complete the cable seating with its end fully inside the tube. The professional should attach the underbody retainer to the vehicle when installing a new cable but should place the cable on the underbody retainer during reuse before pushing the tab into position. Lower the vehicle then connect the park brake cable end to the equalizer and set the proper tension of the cable. Finish the installation by putting on the console rear trim plate.
