Chevrolet HHR Parking Brake Cable Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the rear parking brake cable (Disc) on Chevrolet HHR?
A: The first step to change the Disc-type parking brake rear cable involves removal of the console rear trim plate. The first step is to loosen the adjusting nut until tension is reduced in the front cable. You should disengage the correct rear park brake cable end by releasing it from the cable equalizer and lift the vehicle before installation. Release the tab on the underbody retainer when reusing the cable but remove the cable entirely when using a new one. Apply careful prying pressure to the edge of the C-shaped retainer of the park brake cable to detach it from the bracket at the rear axle trailing arm pivot before pulling out the cable from the cable guide tube. Start by removing the tire and wheel and then detach the cable end from the caliper park brake lever before using a flat-bladed screwdriver to unlock the retaining tabs on the park brake cable fitting and separate it from the cable bracket. Begin by removing the bolt from the rear park brake cable guide then uninstall the cable. To install the park brake cable insert it through the caliper cable bracket followed by assembly of the rear park brake cable guide retaining bolt while it reaches 10 Nm of torque (89 lb in) before securely fastening the cable fitting into the cable bracket ensuring the retaining tabs properly seat. You must hook up the cable terminal to the caliper park brake lever while you reinstall the rear tire combined with wheel assembly before guiding the park brake cable inside the cable guide tube. The C-shaped retainer should be installed on the park brake cable before placing it inside the bracket at the rear axle trailing arm pivot. The procedure for new cables requires attachment of the underbody retainer to the vehicle body but reused cables must be placed on the underbody retainer with tab activation. Lower the vehicle while connecting the park brake cable end to the equalizer followed by tension adjustment and lastly installing the console rear trim plate.
