2007 Chevrolet HHR Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the rear parking brake cable on 2007 Chevrolet HHR?
A: Start by removing the console rear trim plate followed by full release of the park brake lever to replace the parking brake rear cable. First loosen the adjusting nut until tension on the front cable decreases and free the appropriate rear park brake cable end from the cable equalizer. Support the vehicle while lifting it upwards. When reusing the park brake cable, you must free the tab located on the underbody retainer to detach the cable. For new cable installation users must remove the underbody retainer which is connected to the vehicle body. The c-shaped retainer should be pried off the bracket at the rear axle trailing arm pivot without cable tension while removing the cable from the cable guide tube. Start the process by taking off the Brake Drum with the rear wheel assembly. The retaining tab found on the park brake cable fitting requires a flat-bladed screwdriver to press and tip the cable end into the backing plate before rotating the cable to free the second retaining tab. Lower the cable while advancing the cable toward the rear until the cable clears the park brake lever slot and then raise it to make a full release. To install the park brake cable you must guide it through the backing plate opening with the cable return spring rested behind the spring positioning tab. Then continue pushing the cable toward the trailing Brake Shoe until it reaches the slotted park brake lever before pressing the cable into the slot for frontward tension. Use a flat-bladed screwdriver to block the cable inside the lever opening before pulling the cable return spring through the backing plate hole and properly fastening the cable fitting to the plate while making sure retaining tabs stay in position. Put on the c-shaped retainer into the rear axle trailing arm pivot bracket and position the cable into the cable guide tube before ensuring that the cable end fully rests within the bracket. Route a new cable under the vehicle and fasten the underbody retainer. For used cables install first to the underbody retainer before pressing the tab into position. The procedure includes lowering the vehicle while installing the park brake cable end to the equalizer followed by cable tension adjustment and subsequent installation of the console rear trim plate.
