2006 Chevrolet HHR Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the rear parking brake cable on 2006 Chevrolet HHR?
A: The process of rear park brake cable replacement starts by letting go of the park brake lever and taking out the extension replacement items on the floor console near center. The adjusting nut should be loosened all the way to eliminate tension within the park brake cables. It is necessary to detach the rear park brake cable end from the cable equalizer and to remove the rear cable fitting from the park brake lever bracket. Slightly pull on the body of the rear park brake cable through the grommet and raise the vehicle. The underbody retainer needs releasing just for cable reinstallation but must be removed for new cable installation. Use caution to detach the c-shaped retainer from the cable by gently removing it from the underbody without force on the cable before removing the vehicle cable. Disassemble the tire and wheel from the rear position before removing the Brake Drum. A flat-bladed screwdriver should be used to compress the park brake cable fitting retaining tabs which will disconnect it from the backing plate allowing the cable return spring to pass through. Stand the cable at the rear to clear it past the park brake lever before lifting the cable fully out. Remove the cable from the vehicle after that. The new cable installation begins by passing it through the backing plate before arranging the cable return spring just behind the spring positioning tab. Guide the cable end to go beyond the park brake lever slot then push it down into place while securing with cable tension directed toward the front. A flat-bladed screwdriver should be used to stop the cable from popping out during fitting of the cable connection to the backing plate. Install the Brake Drum and rear tire as well as the wheel assembly before inserting the cable through the underside of the vehicle. Insert the c-shaped retainer through the bracket located at the rear axle trailing arm pivot then fasten it with the park brake cable pass-thru grommet. The underbody retainer must be fastened when installing a new cable but the retainer needs the cable mounting first when using an existing cable. Lower the vehicle to begin by securing the cable fitting to the park brake lever bracket. Then follow up with the adjustment of park brake cable tension before reinstalling the extension replacement - floor console - center.
