How to replace the rear axle shaft on 2009 GMC Sierra 1500?

The process starts by lifting and supporting the vehicle before removing the tire and wheel assembly. Initial steps require removal of the Wheel Speed Sensor before removing both the rear Brake Drum and brake caliper mounting bracket where applicable. Reverse procedure requires users to remove the rear axle housing cover with gasket before throwing away the Differential pinion gear shaft bolt. The procedure demands special handling for removing locking differentials so follow step-by-step instructions specific to this item. Move on to removing the Differential pinion gear shaft only when the vehicle lacks a locking Differential. To remove the lock use a screwdriver to turn it toward the thrust block alignment while you push the rear Axle Shaft forward. When the rear Axle Shaft does not come out easily use the j 2619-01 (hammer) and j 45859 (remover/installer) to receive assistance with removal. Install new seals and bearings to replace front Axle Shaft parts when necessary. The disc brake Axle Shaft and drum brake Axle Shaft should go in before you install a replacement seal unless the seal has damage. Attach the lock to the rear axle but keep the Differential pinion gears shaft accessible before tightening a new bolt to 34 nm (25 lb ft) for 8.6 inch axles or 50 nm (37 lb ft) for 9.5 inch axles. Reinstall the Wheel Speed Sensor and brake caliper mounting bracket as well as the rear Brake Drum if equipped and the tire and wheel assembly. Finally attach the rear axle housing cover and gasket. You should lower the vehicle and drop the support next.

When the rear Axle Shaft does not come out easily use the j 2619-01 (hammer) and j 45859 (remover/installer) to receive assistance with removal. Install new seals and bearings to replace front Axle Shaft parts when necessary. The disc brake Axle Shaft and drum brake Axle Shaft should go in before you install a replacement seal unless the seal has damage. Attach the lock to the rear axle but keep the Differential pinion gears shaft accessible before tightening a new bolt to 34 nm (25 lb ft) for 8.6 inch axles or 50 nm (37 lb ft) for 9.5 inch axles. Reinstall the Wheel Speed Sensor and brake caliper mounting bracket as well as the rear Brake Drum if equipped and the tire and wheel assembly. Finally attach the rear axle housing cover and gasket. You should lower the vehicle and drop the support next.
