2010 GMC Savana 1500 Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the rear disc brake pads (JH5, JH6) on 2010 GMC Savana 1500?
A: To change to the rear disc brake pads (JH5, JH6), start by checking the fluid level in the brake master cylinder reservoir; if it is at the midway point between maximum-full point to the minimum allowable level there is no need for fluid removal but if it is above, lower it to midway point. Lift the vehicle and take the tire and wheel assembly off. Check the caliper's operation and apply a c-clamp to progressively bottom the pistons of the caliper, repositioning as needed. Put a strong mechanic wire on the brake caliper, to take it away from the fixing stand without loosening the connection of hydraulic brake flexible hose. Examine caliper assembly and remove the brake pads from the caliper bracket recording their position and dispose of anti-rattle clips. The task to replace the brake pads requires you to apply and fit the new anti rattle clips to the Brake Caliper Bracket, fit the brake caliper unto the car and place the new brake pads to resemble as you had noted while you put them off, both in the position. Reinstall the tire and wheel assembly, lower the vehicle and with the engine off apply the brake pedal gradually to about 2/3 of the travel distance, and release it in a slow way. Repeat after 15 seconds, until a firm pedal is achieved to properly seat the brake caliper pistons and pads. Finally, top-up the master cylinder reservoir to the right level with fresh brake fluid, and burnish the brake pads, and rotors if required.
