  Q: How to replace the harmonic balancer on Chevrolet Avalanche 2500?

  A: Begin the crankshaft balancer replacement by removing the air conditioning (A/C) belt followed by the fan then the Starter motor. The Flywheel holding tool (J 42847) should have its teeth match up with engine Flywheel teeth by inserting it into Starter bolt holes and applying 50 nm (37 ft. Lbs.) torque to the bolts. Install the crankshaft balancer protector button (J 42846) onto the crankshaft end after removing the crankshaft balancer bolt with its washer. The Harmonic Balancer remover (J 38416-B) should be used together with the protector button to extract the crankshaft balancer by inserting its legs into the balancer inner hub recesses and screwing the center screw until the balancer clears the crankshaft nose. Remove both the balancer along with its protector button after completion. Before installing the balancer position it directly onto the crankshaft nose without deviations while applying thick grease of engine oil to prevent metal-to-metal contact. The crankshaft balancer installer (J 42845) should be used to fully position the balancer against the crankshaft sprocket while using the provided lubricant each installation cycle. Once the balancer reaches complete seat position against the crankshaft sprocket use the installer tool to tighten it. Remove the tool to install the crankshaft bolt and washer by torquing it to 255 nm (189 ft. Lbs.). Before completion remove the Flywheel holding tool (J 42847) to reinstall the Starter motor followed by the fan and a/c belt.
