Chevrolet Colorado Steering Shaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to Service and Repair the Steering Shaft in a Tilt Column on Chevrolet Colorado?
A: Sanitizing the SIR system is the first step before replacing a tilt column shaft. Begin by removing the tilt spring before getting to the linear shift assembly if needed in addition to the electrical brake transmission shift interlock (BTSI) actuator. First, uninstall the turn signal cancel cam assembly, ignition switch and lock housing and upper intermediate steering shaft from the assembly. Use the Pivot Pin Remover (J 21854-01) to remove pivot pins after lowering the lower shaft bearing assembly from the system. When ready to detach the assembly, pull the tilt arm to free the lock shoes from steering column support dowel pins. Next move on to removing the steering shaft assembly. When installing start with the steering shaft assembly inside the steering column housing before adding the steering column housing assembly. First activate the tilt lever to guide the lock shoes onto the dowel pins then rotate the assembly to find proper pivot pin alignment. Apply GM P/N 12346293 (Canadian P/N 992723) lubricant to new pivot pins and press them into position until they become firmly embedded before staking them at three new points. The installation process requires the replacement of lower shaft bearing assembly followed by upper intermediate steering shaft and ignition switch and lock housing. Before completion attach the linear shift assembly, turn signal cam assembly and finally put in the tilt spring while enabling SIR functionality.
