Chevrolet Colorado Rack and Pinion Boot Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the rack and pinion boot and breather tube using the J 22610 Keystone Clamp Pliers on Chevrolet Colorado?
    A:
For boot and breather tube off-vehicle replacement work, employ j 22610 keystone clamp pliers (J 22610). The first step involves removing the outer tie rod then the hexagon jam nut on the inner tie rod assembly. Begin by removing the tie rod end clamp from the Rack And Pinion Boot but keep the side cutters for boot clamp removal. Cut the boot clamp with the side cutters then discard the clamp before moving forward. The team should label the breather tube's position on the gear assembly before they take off both the breather tube and Rack and Pinion Boot. To finish installation fit a new boot clamp onto the Rack and Pinion Boot then apply grease to both the inner tie rod assembly and the Rack And Pinion gear assembly before putting the Rack and Pinion Boot onto the inner tie rod assembly. Reinstall breather tubes according to their removal markings on the molded nipple of the Rack and Pinion Boot. The Rack and Pinion Boot must remain free of twists or puckers during installation. Manual adjustment of the boot positioning is needed before inserting it into the gear assembly groove. Use the j 22610 keystone clamp pliers (J 22610) to secure the boot clamp onto the Rack and Pinion Boot. Then crimp the clamp while the tool is clamped to install the tie rod end clamp onto the Rack and Pinion Boot. Finally secure the hexagon jam nut to the inner tie rod assembly to finish building the outer tie rod assembly.
