Initiate work by taking out the Rack and Pinion Boot coupled with the breather tube while locking the gear within a vise. A proper steering gear preload adjustment must be avoided prior to separating the Tie Rod from the steering gear because such change could damage the pinion and steering gear components. The shock dampener must be removed from inside the inner Tie Rod housing while sliding it onto the rack. Apply a pipe wrench to the rack adjacent to the inner Tie Rod housing and simultaneously use a wrench on the flats of the inner Tie Rod housing to turn it counterclockwise for separation from the rack. The same procedure should be repeated for both the inner Tie Rod housing as well as the inner Tie Rod. Before proceeding remove loctite residue from the threaded components of inner Tie Rod and rack. Install the shock dampener on the rack by placing it forward while cleaning the threads first and subsequently applying loctite 262 or equivalent to the inner Tie Rod threads as needed. Attach the inner Tie Rod halfway to the rack while holding aside the inner Tie Rod housing with a pipe wrench and tightening with the inner Tie Rod wrench (J34028) until reaching 100 nm (74 ft. Lbs.). The procedure should be performed again for the inner Tie Rod assembly while confirming the proper staking of the assembly housing to the male rack. A gage with 0.010 inch diameter should be used to check the stake position before inserting the shock dampener into the inner Tie Rod housing and sliding it until it reaches the bottom. Afterwards you need to put back the Rack and Pinion Boot while reattaching the breather tube.
