Chevrolet HHR Coil Springs are functional add-ons which take the body weight of the automobile and also ensure it does not sag as well as adjust to the variation in road surfaces to maintain a correct height. Signs that indicate worn out coil springs include; bottoming out and uneven wearing off of the tires which compromise on the wheel alignment. Additional conventional coil springs can be ordered as OEM specific, after market, progressive or cargo coil springs for extra weight capacities. In lift and lowering kits, coil springs are vital as they keep the body roll down and increase the traction of the vehicle. They are available in different height, spring rates and categories; namely, linear rate, progressive and dual rate springs. Spring rate defines how stiff the suspension or the car will be, how it will handle and how it moves over a bump. There is fine tuning in the ride height as it provides a coilover kit and height adjustable springs, so that the gap between the tire and the fender should not be altered while having a lowering kit.

Chevrolet HHR Coil Springs Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Replace Coil Springs on Chevrolet HHR?
    A:
Vehicle feet off the ground after first placing support under its height point for clutch replacement. The rear axle needs to be supported using tall jack stands so they sit near each Shock Absorber. The u-clips securing the rear brake hoses at the rear axle can be removed first before loosening the lower Shock Absorber bolts. Use the tall jack stands to carefully lower the rear axle toward the floor which relaxes the rear springs for spring removal. Detach the upper spring seat/jounce bumper from the spring but maintain the lower spring seat on the axle base. When placing rear springs make sure to position them with the colored tag pointing toward the vehicle's rear. The springs require no specific orientation during installation. Position the spring with the tag toward the rear while ensuring the lower coil fits into the lower spring seat. Next, install the upper spring seat/jounce bumper on the spring. To install the lower Shock Absorber bolts you need to use jack stands to lift the rear axle then compress the rear springs. After securing the u-clips replace the rear brake hoses back in the axle brackets.
  • Q: How to service and repair the front coil springs and shock absorber on Chevrolet HHR?
    A:
Start by removing the strut from the vehicle with the intention of servicing and repairing the suspension strut. Mount the strut in strut spring compressor (J 45400). Compress the spring when the strut is free, then turn the spring compressor forcing screw until the coil spring gets compressed. Relax the compressor forcing screw to remove the upper strut mount and coil spring. Remove the upper strut mount nut by using a 45 t0r0x(R) socket to keep the strut shaft and use a strut rod socket or equivalent to accomplish this. Strut mount-manufacturers and you can remove the upper strut mount and coil spring from the strut spring compressor (J 45400), take the strut out of the compressor. For assembly, go ahead and install the coil spring and upper strut mount back into the strut spring compressor (J 45400) and turn the spring compressor forcing screw until the coil spring is compressed. Mount the strut to the coil spring and upper strut mount, and then only loosely install the strut retaining nut. Using a 45 torx(R) socket, secure the strut shaft; apply a strut rod socket or equivalent to secure the upper strut mount nut, tightening it to 75 n.m (55 lb ft). Finally, bring out the strut from the strut spring compressor (J 45400), and install the strut in the vehicle.
