The Heater Core in Chevrolet Impala automobiles is used to warm the interior of the vehicle through engine overheat. Looking like a mini-radiator, it cools a water-antifreeze solution and the heater core warms the cabin air as a fan blows over it in the car. Some types of Heater Cores can have valves or doors for temperature control while some systems have electromechanical actuators to make the adjustments with high accuracy. In air-conditioned vehicles, the Heater Core is also helpful in dehumidification since it re-heats cool air. Problems that may be experienced are blockage, crack, and rust and usually, repairs involve the unbending of the dashboard.

Chevrolet Impala Heater Core Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the Heater Core on Chevrolet Impala?
    A:
Before starting the heater core replacement you must drain the cooling system and remove the fuel injector sight shield. The Hose Clamp Pliers tool (J 38185) helps secure the heater hose inlet and outlet clamps before the dissconnection of inlet and outlet heater hoses can proceed. Start the procedure by taking away the RH and LH Instrument Panel Closeout/Insulator panels and floor carpet and rear floor air outlet duct from the floor reinforcement holes while disconnecting the heater air outlet cover during this process. Disassemble the heater air outlet cover by first removing its screws and heat stakes and finish by removing the cover itself. Next remove the screws and heat stakes from the heater core cover before taking out the heater core itself along with the heater core foam seal . The first step for installation involves attaching a new heater core foam seal onto the HVAC module assembly followed by heater core installation. Next drill the dimples next to the heat stakes in the heater core cover using a 5.5 mm (7/32 in) drill bit. The HVAC module assembly requires the heater core cover by using screws which need to be tightened to 1.5 N.m (13 lb in). Install the heater air outlet cover along with its screws then tighten each one to 1.5 N.m (13 lb in). The rear floor air outlet duct requires connection to the heater air outlet cover before installing it through the floor reinforcement holes. Replace all flooring carpeting while installing new RH and LH Instrument Panels together with their closeout and insulator components. The last steps involve heater core hose reattachment and Hose Clamp Pliers (J 38185) for clamp realignment then the installation of the fuel injector sight shield followed by filling the cooling system.
  • Q: How to service and repair the heater core on Chevrolet Impala?
    A:
Service and repairs on the Heater Core require you to take off the air cleaner assembly together with the fuel injector sight shield for vehicles with 3.8l. Position aside the heater hose inlet and outlet clamp at the Heater Core with (J 38185). The service process starts by disconnecting Heater Core heater hoses at their inlet and outlet and then removing instrument panel insulators from right and left sides and the lower floor console. Start by removing the bolts which allows placement of the hvac wiring harness bracket to the side. The heater outlet cover must be placed downward and rearward to disconnect from the rear area floor duct assembly. This enables removal of the cover screws and subsequent heater outlet cover extraction. You should remove all the Heater Core cover screws before moving on to eliminate the cover itself but throwing away the seal (1,2) attached to the Heater Core cover. Disassemble the Heater Core outlet cover by removing its caulk thus discarding the outer seal and operating on the pipe retainer clamp screw and Heater Core line clamp screw. Start by removing the retaining clamp together with the Heater Core from the hvac tower case followed by taking off the tube support bracket and dismissing the hvac lower case's Heater Core lower seal and center seal and upper seal and side seals. Begin the installation process by inserting new Heater Core side seals into the hvac lower case before adding a combination of a new upper seal, center seal and lower seal. The Heater Core requires installation into the hvac lower case after clamping the Heater Core tube support bracket. Fasten a screw to the Heater Core line clamp and apply torque to 1.5 n.m (13 lb in). After that, install the Heater Core mounting clip using a screw and achieve the same tightening specification. After affixing the Heater Core outer seal to its position, install (1,2) new seals on the Heater Core cover while applying caulk to the Heater Core outlet cover. Reinstall the Heater Core cover with its screws using a torque of 1.5 n.m (13 lb in). Next attach the Heater Core outlet cover by screwing it in while using 1.5 n.m (13 lb in) torque. After installing both bolts of the hvac wiring harness bracket to 10 n.m torque (89 lb in) the installer should secure the lower floor console and right and left instrument panel insulators. Follow this procedure to install the Heater Core inlet and outlet hoses while positioning the Heater Core clamp according to specifications and use tool (J 38185) forhorizontalalignment when repositioning the heater hose clamps on the Heater Core. The coolant needs to be filled while the fuel injector sight shield should be installed on all vehicles with 3.8l engines and the air cleaner assembly must be reattached.
