Chevrolet Lumina Timing Cover Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the timing cover on Chevrolet Lumina?
A: The first step in serving or repairing the Timing Cover is disconnecting the battery ground (negative) cable. The service begins with drainning both engine coolant and oil followed by removing the coolant recovery reservoir as well as the crankshaft balancer and drive belt tensioner and Power Steering Pump with attached lines before relocating the pump to the side. Remove the bypass pipe from the front cover and disconnect the hose departing from the coolant pump. Dismantle the lower Crankshaft Position Sensor wiring harness bracket while removing the coolant pump pulley then disconnect its electrical connector. Disassemble the engine front cover bolts and engine front cover gasket while removing both the front cover and its gasket. Inspection of the engine front cover should take place after cleaning its gasket sealing surfaces. When replacing the engine front cover it is necessary to remove three components: drive belt shield, crankshaft position sensor, and coolant pump. When replacing these components initiate their installation by first securing the coolant pump and Crankshaft Position Sensor to the front engine cover then continue with the drive belt shield. Screw the drive belt shield bolt while tightening it to 10 nm (89 inch lbs.). The installation requires gm p/n 1052080 sealant or equivalent for both sides of the lower tabs on the engine front cover gasket before gasket and cover installation. Tighten the five small engine front cover bolts to 21 nm (15 ft.lbs.) and the three large bolts to 55 nm (41 ft.lbs.) while the two large bolts require 47 nm (35 ft.lbs.). The lower Crankshaft Position Sensor wiring harness bracket returns to position before connecting the electrical connector to the sensor harness. Begin by mounting the coolant pump pulley followed by attaching a radiator outlet hose to the pump before completing the connection of a thermostat bypass pipe to the engine front cover. Safely reinstall the Power Steering Pump followed by its lines alongside the drive belt tensioner and crankshaft balancer. Place engine oil into the vehicle's engine and engine coolant into its cooling system before reconnecting the battery's negative (ground) cable. Conclude with the execution of ckp system variation learn operations.
