Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Classic Brake Calipers Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to replace the front brake calipers on the 1500 Series on Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Classic?
A: Before replacing the 1500 series front brake caliper check master cylinder reservoir fluid level. If parallel with mid-point remove no fluid but if fluid is above the mid-point reduce it to that mark. Lift your vehicle with support stands before taking off the tire and wheel unit. Push brake caliper pistons back using 2 big c-clamps placed over the top of the unit towards the back of the outboard pad until they fully retract. Put on a rubber plug over the exposed brake pipe end to seal fluid loss before cleaning the area around the brake hose coupling. During brake hose removal discard the stuck copper gaskets which usually remain on the caliper and brake pipe ends before separating the components. After removing the brake caliper bolts you must handle the brake rotors-calipers properly when the brake pedals stay free for brake system protection. Put the new caliper on the caliper bracket and tighten bolt set to 100 nm (74 ft.lbs) torque. Install 2 new copper brake hose gaskets on the brake hose bolt and thread this assembly onto the brake hose before attaching it to the caliper bolt while tightening the bolt to 40 nm torque. After cleaning brake fluid from the hydraulic system you need to set the tire and wheel then top up brake reservoir to a suitable fluid level.
