GMC Jimmy Brake Shoe Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: What is the proper procedure for replacing brake lining material and installing brake shoes on this on GMC Jimmy?
A: This vehicle requires gm replacement brake lining material because it controls brake balance and stopping distance which will alter if any materials outside gm standards are used. Begin the Brake Shoe removal procedure by securing the vehicle with safety stands and afterward remove the tire and wheel assembly. Note down any relationships between the axle hub and Brake Drum before you begin wearing protective gear against brake dust. Begin by disconnecting the Brake Drum from the axle before removing the Brake Shoe return springs followed by the Brake Shoe guide and actuator link alongside two hold down springs and pins, then complete with removal of the actuator lever, pivot, return spring and park brake strut, strut spring and lever. Separate the brake shoes from all components of the adjusting screw assembly with its spring. A careful examination of all components must be conducted to detect heat or stress-based discoloration and players of any worn parts. Evaluate the Wheel Cylinder for leaks as well as check the Brake Drum for wear-related scoring and fabrication limits. The installation requires application of gm p/n 1052196 or equivalent lubricant on all surfaces of the Brake Shoe backing plate and adjusting screw components and their threaded contact points and socket framework. Both adjusting screws must remain separate and non-interchangeable. Place the brake shoes adjusting screw assembly and spring onto the brake shoes yet keep the coils away from the adjusting screw. The installation procedure requires the brake shoes to be placed on the backing plate before adding the park brake lever and strut spring then park brake strut followed by the actuator lever with its lever pivot and actuator lever return spring and then two hold down pins accompanied by two hold down springs followed by the Brake Shoe guide and actuator link and Brake Shoe return springs. The last steps include Brake Drum installation while following disassembly marks then reinstalling the tire together with the wheel assembly followed by brake adjustment and removal of safety stands to lower the vehicle.
