- Q: How to replace the oil cooler hose on GMC Jimmy?A: The first step to replace oil cooler lines requires you to pull the plastic cap from the quick connect fitting along the cooler line by 5 cm (2 inches). A bent-tip screwdriver should be used to create tension on the exposed retaining ring portion until it can be fully extracted. It is essential to remove the retaining ring followed by pulling the cooler line out through its quick connect fitting. The lower cooler line replacement procedure requires wheel well access through the right side for vehicles using a 4.3l engine along with 4wd system. Rising and supporting the vehicle allows for the removal of the engine nut on a two-point-two-liter engine while a four-point-three-liter engine requires removal of its clip and stud which secures the cooler line. Following transmission support by a jack both the exhaust crossover pipe and transmission support assembly must be set aside before safely lowering the transmission to reach the cooler line fittings. Extract cooler lines from their transmission connectors and place any necessary transfer case vent hose to a different location. New lines should receive fresh components as the existing oil lines and fittings and retaining rings have to be brand new. Position the retaining ring's one end inside the quick connect fitting slot and turn it clockwise until its three ears pass through the slots. Check that the retaining ring slides without restrictions and you can see it from the interior space of the fitting. Screw in the cooler lines one at a time while applying plastic caps to both ends before joining them with the quick connect fittings. Insert the cooler line until you hear or feel the click before pulling it back quickly for proper attachment. Place the plastic cap onto the fitting while keeping the retaining ring at its normal position until the cap is fully set with no gap visible and the yellow band located inside the fitting. After installing all cooling line ends you should raise the transmission for reinstallation of the exhaust crossover pipe and transmission support assembly. Drivers need to install the stud and clip that holds the cooler line to the engine while tightening the stud to 11 nm (97 inch lbs.) for 4.3l engines and they should use a nut to secure the oil cooler lines on 2.2l engines with the same torque of 11 nm (97 inch lbs.). Lower the vehicle while filling the transmission with approved fluid to its appropriate levels before verifying there are no fluid leaks.
