GMC Sierra 3500 Oil Pan Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the oil pan on GMC Sierra 3500?
A: Begin Oil Pan replacement by making sure the crankshaft balancer does not lift the engine because this can result in damage. Start by dissembling the front Differential when your vehicle has four wheel drive (4WD) and then move on to the Starter motor. Begin by removing all bolts securing the Oil Pan skid plate followed by separating the skid plate from its position. Model-specific maintenance steps for two wheel drive (2WD) models involve deleting both crossbar bolts and crossbar components. For 4wd models, do the same. Drain all engine oil before disassembling the oil level indicator along with the removal of the oil level sensor electrical connector. The engine harness clip needs detachment from the Oil Pan before removing the oil level sensor. Bolt out the battery cable channel while relocating the channel until you take away the Oil Pan bolts. Owners can save money by keeping the Oil Pan Gasket when it shows no sign of damage. During new Oil Pan installation apply gm 2346286 sealant at four locations on the front and rear sections of the crankshaft bearing caps. First install a fresh Oil Pan Gasket inside the pan groove followed by installation of the Oil Pan using its bolts. Follow bolt installation sequence to achieve initial torque of 10 nm (89 inch lbs.) then complete with final torque of 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.). Secure the battery cable channel by installing a bolt that should reach 9 nm (80 inch lbs.) torque rating. After attaching the oil level sensor to the Oil Pan with a 20 nm (15 ft. Lbs.) torque you must install the engine harness clip and reconnect the oil level sensor electrical connector. The oil level indicator needs replacement before proceeding to refill the engine with oil. Using a torque wrench torque the crossbar bolts to 100 nm (74 ft. Lbs.) during installation for 4wd models. For 2wd models, do the same. Place the Oil Pan skid plate and tighten its bolts to 20 nm (15 ft. Lbs.) while also reinstalling the Starter motor and front Differential when required.
