    Q:
How to replace the evaporator core on Chevrolet Cobalt? Posted by Customer
    A:
The replacement of the Evaporator core begins with removing the hvac module from the vehicle before using a chisel to break the Heater Core cover heat stakes which enables Heater Core removal. Open the passenger compartment filter door first by unsnap opening then completely detach the lower hvac case through its screws to gain access to the Evaporator core. When replacing the Evaporator core professionals should apply polyalkylene glycol (PAG) oil after which they should install new seal washers at the Evaporator core fittings. The thermal expansion valve (TXV) should be installed following bolt tightening to 7 n.m (62 lb in). After position the orifice plate correctly and full seat the lower hvac case, install the Evaporator core with new seal washers by tightening all lower hvac case screws to 1.8 n.m (15 lb in). The steps include securing the passenger compartment filter door and inspecting the foam Heater Core seal on the lower hvac case before replacing it with kent industries adhesive black foam tape (P/N 46480) or equivalent. The hvac module requires the Heater Core installation while maintaining the Heater Core cover in proper position until it is fully seated before tightening the Heater Core cover screws to 1.8 n.m torque. Complete the vehicle procedure by installing the hvac module before vacuuming the refrigerant system and charging it with the halogen leak detector (J39400-A) to check for air leaks on the fittings. After reconnecting the negative Battery Cable the technician will fill the cooling system according to specifications.
