    The first step for replacing the Escalade or Pickup tailgate handle begins with the tailgate lowered and removal of the three tailgate back bolts along with washers. After elevating the tailgate you should proceed with gently prying off the bezel which wraps around the handle while checking for retention prong damage. You should get a new bezel which includes the prongs because the prongs need replacement when they break or get bent. Detach the latch operating rods from their retainers on the handle by moving them backwards before pulling out the tailgate handle assembly. The handle assembly goes inside the tailgate while latch operating rods find their retainers on the handle for installation. Fit the bezel to both the handle and tailgate before lowering the tailgate while securing the handle's three bolts and washers through the tailgate from behind. Tailgate to handle bolt torque must be set at 25 N.m (18 lb ft).

Final handle bolt torque must be set to 25 N.m (18 lb ft) yet only after achieving proper component alignment.

    Before putting in the new handle, open the liftgate and get rid of the cover panel. Then, unhook the cable assembly from the actuator and take away the nuts positioned behind the handle assembly to remove the entire assembly. When installing, insert the handle assembly into the tailgate, as indicated by the Fastener Notice and attach the nuts to the assembly from the back of the tailgate, tightening them to 9 N.m (80 lb in). Reattach the actuator cable assembly to the handle and set the liftgate trim panel in place again.

    To replace the tailgate handle on the utility car, one should pull down the tailgate and see the trim panel and then see the latch assembly cover from tailgate. Then, take off the two bolts and washers that are found at the back of the tailgate behind the handle assembly before pulling up the tailgate. Carefully pull out the handle assembly and disengage latch operating rods from the clips seated on the handle by pushing them to the rear end to ensure that the whole handle assembly is removed from the tailgate. For installation, install back the handle assembly in the tailgate as well as latch operation rods in clips on the handle. Lower the tailgate, and attach the two bolts and washers on the handle assembly on the back of the tailgate, do not tighten, 4 N.m (35 lb in). Finally, install the latch assembly cover to the tailgate; make sure that both gates are closed for the appropriate alignment, and re-install the tailgate trim panel.
