Backing Plate

To remove the front disc Brake Dust Shields (FE1), elevate and support the vehicle while removing the tire and the wheel assembly. Support the brake caliper with heavy mechanic's wire or similar whenever it's removed from its mount with the hydraulic flexible brake hose still connected or failure to do so may damage the hose causing a leakage of brake fluid. But off the brake caliper and caliper mounting bracket as an assembly from the suspension knuckle with no tension being on the hydraulic brake flexible hose and do not remove the hose from the caliper. Then, take out the front wheel bearing assembly and the dust shields of the Steering Knuckle. When installing the new dust shields, clean any rusts or contaminants from the wheel bearing flange & brake rotor mating surfaces using the wheel hub resurfacing kit(J 42450-A) in order to reduce excessive lateral runout & brake pulsation. Clean the mating surfaces of Steering Knuckle dust shields, install the dust shields to the Steering Knuckle, followed with the wheel bearing assembly. Finally, reinstall the brake caliper and caliper bracket in an assembly to the suspension knuckle, re-mount the tire and wheel assembly on, and have the vehicle lowered.

The first step to replace a parking Brake Backing Plate involves lifting and sustaining the vehicle. Start by removing the rear tire together with the wheel assemblies then proceed to remove the rear Wheel Hub and bearing assembly. Adjust the park brake adjuster nut until the bolt reaches its closed position. Following this pull off the park brake shoe assembly and shoe hold down spring by spreading the shoe slightly when pulling from the actuator assembly. Begin by removing the dust cover then unfastening the two park brake cable bracket to knuckle mounting bolts before removing the backing plate from the knuckle. A flat bladed tool should be utilized to operate the actuator retaining tab outward before pulling the actuator from the backing plate. Place the backing plate first onto the knuckle then establish the actuator relationship between the plate and tab extension towards open before adding the actuator to the backing plate. Fix the two park brake cable bracket to its knuckle mounting bolts at 60 n.m (44 lb ft). To install the park brake shoe assembly first grip the shoe while applying slight spreading pressure before pulling it over the actuator assembly and finally installing the park brake shoe hold down spring. Reposition the park brake while performing the installation of rear Wheel Hub and bearing assembly along with the rear tire and wheel assembly. Finally, lower the vehicle.

Begin the front disc brake dust shield replacement process by lifting the vehicle and supporting it before taking out the tire along with wheel. Proceed by disconnecting the brake caliper along with its mounting bracket from the knuckle suspension while keeping the hydraulic brake flexible hose tension-free using heavy mechanic's wire. Next step is to extract both the front wheel bearing assembly and the dust shield from the Steering Knuckle. Use the Wheel Hub resurfacing kit (J42450-A) to remove all rust and corrosion from the Wheel Hub and sanitize both the wheel bearing flange and brake rotor mating surfaces to decrease potential lateral runout and brake pulsation. First clean Steering Knuckle mating surfaces as well as dust shield before putting the dust shield onto the Steering Knuckle and finally installing the wheel bearing assembly. Lower the vehicle before reinstalling the tire and wheel assembly and then rejoin the brake caliper and bracket assembly to the suspension knuckle.

Move the actuator retaining tab outward and install the actuator to the backing plate.

Reinstall the wheel bearing assembly.

Support the brake caliper with heavy mechanic's wire or an equivalent whenever it is detached from its mount while the hydraulic flexible brake hose remains connected.

Install the backing plate to the knuckle and then install the two park brake cable bracket to knuckle mounting bolts, tightening them to 60 Nm (44 ft. lbs.).

Reinstall the rear wheel hub and bearing assembly, followed by the rear tire and wheel assembly, and then lower the vehicle.
