  • Q: How to replace the Rack and Pinion steering gear on 2000 Buick LeSabre?
A: To change the Rack And Pinion, start by using the steering column anti rotation pin (J 42640) to lock the steering column. The intermediate shaft lower coupling can be removed, raise the vehicle and remove the Rack And Pinion heat shield. Disconnect the pressure and return pipes (1&2) from the Rack And Pinion and if so equipped, the magnasteer(TM) electric connector. Unscrew the stabilizer shaft links from the lower control arms and swing the stabilizer shaft to gain access to the steering rack bolts. Disengage the tie rod ends from the cylinder knuckles, then unbolt the Rack And Pinion attachment bolts and the Rack And Pinion assembly. For installation, locate the Rack And Pinion assembly and mount it back to its position and install the Rack And Pinion bolt and tighten the bolts to 95 nm (70 ft. Lbs.). For the equipped magnasteer(TM), reconnect the electrical magnasteer(TM), and 2 and 1, pressure and return lines to the Rack And Pinion with a162 179 part number tightening to 137 49 nm, 22 ft. Lbs. Race the heat shield and bolts as well as tighten the heat shield bolts to 10 nm (7 ft. Lbs.). Position the stabilizer shaft and attach the links to the lower control arms, and attach the tie rod ends to the knuckles. Lower the vehicle and install the intermediate shaft to the Rack And Pinion, tightening the intermediate shaft pinch bolt to 45 nm (33 ft. Lbs). Finally, take out the steering column anti rotation pin (J 42640), fill and bleed the power steering system, and in case the Rack And Pinion was replaced, inspect the front toe-in settings.
