2000 Chevrolet Camaro Parking Brake Cable Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the rear parking brake cable on 2000 Chevrolet Camaro?
A: A proper replacement of the rear parking brake cable begins with total park brake lever disengagement because an incomplete lever position creates resistance when trying to move the equalizer rearward. The vehicle should be raised to proper height before setting it down securely. Cut off the tie strap after pulling the front cable strand to its maximum reach point at which it extends without retraction and remains in position. The rear parking brake cable can be removed from the underbody bracket by using Parking Brake Cable Release Tool (J 37043) to compress the retainer fingers on the casing while pulling the cable from its bracket. Detach the two rear park brake cables that run through the park brake cable equalizer before using an appropriate tool to pull the park brake rear cable through its guides installed on the rear axle housing. You must unhook the rear cable eyelet from the park brake actuator lever after which you can use the Parking Brake Cable Release Tool (J 37043) to compress the retainer fingers on the conduit fitting for pulling the rear cable from the cable bracket. Start by attaching the conduit fitting to the park brake cable bracket before you install the rear cable eyelet on the park brake actuator lever while allowing its retainer fingers to enter the park brake cable bracket. Insert the rear cable through guides on the rear axle housing while directing its left-hand path above the tie rod bracket then join it to the park brake cable equalizer. Lower the vehicle after installing the rear cable into its underbody bracket and reconnect the tie strap if needed. Then perform three cycles of the park brake lever.
