  • Q: How to replace the rear brake calipers on 2000 Chevrolet Impala?
    A: Start replacing the rear brake caliper by draining most of the master cylinder brake fluid and securing the vehicle on stands. Label where the wheel fits against the wheel hub and bearing before taking out the tires and wheel. Secure the rotor by attaching two wheel nuts. Use a big c-clamp to push the Piston inside the caliper bore while pressing it towards the back of the outboard pad and keep the pressure light to prevent deformation. You must disconnect the hose bolt first before using plugs to keep brake fluid inside the caliper housing and pipe. Detach bolt numbers (1 and 3) keeping the calipers level when removing from flexible hoses and then take off the caliper housing from the rotor and caliper bracket. Look for openings in the Piston boots and verify the caliper bracket boots for damage, replace them when necessary. Examine the caliper bolts for corrosion and damage then replace them with new components. Set the caliper on top of the rotor and placing it over the bracket while making sure bushings are in position. Apply silicone grease to caliper bolts 1 and 3 while omitting the threaded section. Also use silicone grease to lubricate the two rubber boots in caliper bracket 13 and 4. Use a flat tool to fit the boot inside its groove before tightening caliper bolts 1 and 3 to 44 nm (32 ft. Lbs). Replace gaskets at the same time. Secure the brake hose bolt securely with 54 nm torque settings value (40 ft. Lbs.). Put the brake rotor aside before placing new tires and wheels that match the original marks and return the vehicle to ground level. Put clean brake fluid into the master cylinder until it reaches the proper level then push all brake system components to remove air and press the brake pedal three times to let the pads touch the rotor at full stroke. Look for possible hydraulic brake fluid leaks throughout the system before ending the task.
