How should you safely drain oil from gas charged shock absorbers on 2001 Cadillac Seville?

Do not remove the snap ring from inside the gas charged shock absorber because high pressure gas contents will release with extreme force resulting in possible personal injury. Safety glasses should be worn at all times during shock absorber centerpunching and drilling to avoid both tube puncture and personal injury. An indentation must be created at a 10 mm (0.4 inch) distance from the tube bottom through the use of a centerpunch. Mount the shock absorber within a vise in a horizontal position while the shock absorber rod extends to its full dimension. When using a 5mm (3/16 inches) drill bit at the centerpunch location, drill the hole for gas or gas/oil mixture release but contain oil leaks using shop towels. A middle indentation needs to be created using the centerpunch and then the drill bit should produce a second vent hole at this point while oil is contained by shop towels. Stand the shock absorber rod horizontally above a drain pan by putting the holes downward while gently moving the rod in and out of the tube to oil out completely.
