2001 Chevrolet Cavalier Brake Calipers Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace brake calipers on 2001 Chevrolet Cavalier?
A: The initial step for brake caliper replacement demands an inspection of brake master cylinder reservoir fluid levels. A brake fluid level at the midpoint marks that no drainage is needed but fluid should be drained to this point when the level exceeds this area. Start by raising and supporting the vehicle before you mark the wheel position relative to the hub and bearing assembly for correct reinstallation. Place 2 wheel nuts on the hub and bearing assembly to maintain the rotor position before removing the tire wheel assembly. Operate a large c-clamp across the top of the caliper housing to push the Piston toward the caliper bore until you can move the caliper assembly away from the rotor. Tools enable you to detach the bolt that secures the inlet fitting so you can protect it with a plug inserted into both the caliper housing inlet fitting and the brake hose from possible fluid loss and contamination. Htf / c-clamp the caliper off the rotor and knuckle after bolt removal but avoid polishing off corrosion from caliper components. Before mounting the new caliper inspect the bolt assemblies and sleeve components for corrosion damage and replace any broken bushings. You should apply silicone grease generously to the inside surface of the bushings before installing the mounting bolts along with their sleeve components. Position the caliper onto the rotor before placing it into the knuckle and tighten the mounting bolt and sleeve assemblies to 51 nm (38 ft. Lbs.) torque.the inlet fitting needs to be secured at a torque of 44 nm (32 ft. Lbs.) after the mounting bolt reaches 51 nm (38 ft. Lbs.). Install the new wheel and tire by unfastening the wheel nuts that secure the rotor to the hub and bearing assembly before setting the wheel onto the vehicle. Repeatedly press and release the Brake Pedal from 2/3 of its travel distance while the engine remains off until a firm pedal feel indicates the brake caliper pistons and pads have correctly seated. Add brake fluid to the master cylinder until it reaches its prescribed level using pure brake fluid.
