2001 Chevrolet Cavalier Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: Should the ABS Control Module in the brake pressure modulator valve assembly be repaired or replaced for safety reasons on 2001 Chevrolet Cavalier?
A: Repair efforts on the brake pressure modulator valve assembly are prohibited for safety reasons so the entire unit needs replacement. Any loosening of screws on the brake pressure modulator valve assembly will disable the brake circuit leak-tightness thus endangering personnel. First turn the ignition switch to off then remove the connector position assurance component from the port. Open the sliding cover which exposes the electronic brake control module (EBCM) harness connector through the process of lowering the lock tab. Identify where the brake pipes will be positioned in the installation step. Safe accessibility requires disconnecting brake pipes from the brake pressure modulator valve (BPMV) then moving them away while using protective material to cover the open pipe openings. The next step involves disconnecting master cylinder brake pipes from the brake pressure modulator valve (BPMV) while you swing them aside after covering the open pipes. The upper bpmv bracket mounting nut connecting the upper to the lower mounting bracket must be taken off. Brake fluid damage to electrical connections and painted surfaces must be prevented by using shop cloths and suitable containers in combination with fender covers during the procedure. The ebcm/bpmv assembly must be first removed from the vehicle then the ebcm component can be accessed for removal from the bpmv unit. Place the ebcm onto the bpmv before closing it with four screws that should be tightened to 5 nm (44 inch lbs.). Fasten the ebcm/bpmv assembly to the lower mounting bracket by using the provided nut and torque it to 10 nm (7 ft. Lbs.). The brake pipes from the master cylinder need to be fitted onto the bpmv and secured with 24 nm (18 ft. Lbs.) torque. Next, install the brake pipes from calipers and wheel cylinders onto the bpmv and torque them to the same value. Complete the connection of the ebcm harness connector while pressing down on the lock tab and return the sliding connector cover to its locked position and then reinstall the cpa. The automated bleed procedure along with the diagnostic system check - abs need to be executed.
